Ok . the title might have given it away already and this report will be short because of this but we are all pretty seasick . other then that things are going OK. Here some details about the last 36 hours.
The day yesterday was at first nice and calm as forecasted . we were motoring along nicely and that's when the first report was created .. Then things started to change around lunch time . for the people following, we are keeping our watches on Z town time which is Central . no idea what to do with daylight saving changes though so we are NOT doing any of those adjustments to screw our clocks up even more . by the way for the sailors out there, most people talk in ZULU time which is the same as London time except no adjustments to daylight savings; in other words all radio schedules are in ZULU time . sounds funny, doesn't it.
Getting back to our day and night, well the wind picked up and we started beating into the wind . beating is a good description, though the wind wasn't too bad (up to over 22 knots in the night), the seas were horrible. It wasn't so much the size then it was the distance between waves . in sailor jargon they call what we had yesterday squared seas . my guess is 8ft at 8 seconds at best and we are going almost straight into it. DIdn't take long for all of us to get seasick and we have been in that state for the last 24 hours or so. As a result, I haven't eaten much and am trying to at least drink enough. To make matter worse, it is very warm but with the seas the way they are, we need to keep the hatches shut and it is VERY WARM in the boat. All in all, as they say the first few days are the worst and this is shaping up to prove that point . have to say it is a lot easier to read it though then to be in it . ;-)
As a result of being seasick, we hang around mostly and sleep a lot because that's the only thing that helps . even our seasickness medication isn't helping much it seems right now. For me to write this report takes a lot of effort and I still have to at least write a few lines in German too . yesterday, I just took the English Day 1 report and forwarded it without translating because I was too sick.
On the boat, things are mostly as expected. 2 issues have come up, nothing serious but something to keep an eye on. First, I was trying to use my windvane for steering which worked great until the boat suddenly rounded up and tacked on its own . turns out today that the pin that connects the windvane to the steering quadrant just sheered off . so much about stainless steel. When it gets calmer, I will need to look in my nuts and bolts box what I can jury rig up. As a result of that failure, we have to use our electrical/hydraulical autopilot which sucks a lot more electricity then we anticipated and now we need to run the engine about double the time then we planned . glad I took those extra diesel cans with me!!!!!
On the wildlife front we have to report a swarm of dolphins yesterday and a sea turtle not more then 10ft away from the boat today . the water is sooo blue I cannot even describe it and I would really enjoy it if I wouldn't be sick. No fishing report because even the thought of killing and filleting a fish makes me get squeezy.
Hope to have a happier and more upbeat report tomorrow but I am sure you want the true report from Lawur rather then a fabricated vacation story . ;-) . at least we haven't turned around yet as one other boat did a week ago in similar conditions.
Happy voyaging,
TheSchmids Family Sailing on Lawur
