Day 9 of 25 - Rolling on

DAY 9 of 25 - Rolling, rolling and rolling ... no sail configuration or angle has helped.

And another night sitting in my nav station needing to hold on while I write this because it is soooooo rolly . only 16 more days to go . LOL

SAILING UPDATE

Winds have been very steady the last 24 hours blowing in the high 10s and low 20s from the NE or sometimes even the ENE. As planned we made some more westing before we finally decided to go on a downwind run for our next big waypoint (called 1014 in my numbering scheme) which is the next big decision point, ie when to cross over the equator. For now, all we have to do is only slight course changes to make for a more comfortable ride whenever possible but there isn't much we can do right now because the seas are so confused, pretty high 8-10 ft and steep probably only 10 seconds apart. The reason is as now confirmed by weather Don the left over crap from the big weather systems that blew by CA a couple days ago that whips up this 'nice' chop we are experiencing now down south here. We were sailing wing on wing for a while and were still making over 7 knots but with all the waves the jib including the pole to stabilize it we were still flopping around so much that we decided to roll the jib it up for the night and just sail on the main which introduces much less stress into the rig . at least the loud noise is gone when the jib comes back and inflates and whips the mast around . it comes down to the same thing, how comfortable do you want to make it and how hard are you willing to sail . for me the answer is NOT SO hard and more comfort . as you can imagine Niki agrees. Nevertheless, the rolling is VERY UNCOMFORTABLE and we are both pretty much sick of it and are so much looking forward to flat seas but it seems we won't get them for another couple days.

BOAT UPDATE

Still nothing new and you must have guessed that by now, that is a good thing. Our psyche is up a bit after we both got a bit more sleep in and we entertained ourselves today by watching a movie and reading travel books about the South Pacific.

FISHING UPDATE

Nothing to report but a few corrections in good blogging spirit . first the flying fish 'only' fly 150 ft and second there are NO pictures of Matey in the picture section of our website but there was an image attached to the logbook entry called 'Balance of the 3 Fs' . check that out if you want a picture of Matey . sorry if I sent you on a wild goose chase through all our pictures and you couldn't find Matey anywhere; this was NOT a plot to have you go through all our pictures . seriously . ;-)

FOOD PLAN OF THE DAY

Breakfast - Jacker Flaps (corn pancakes) . not exactly sure about the spelling but something like that

Lunch - Ham and cheese sandwich toasted with cocktail sauce and cucumbers

Dinner - Chicken curry with rice and salad . I believe that was the last fresh chicken we had . now it is on to canned chicken

HIGH OF THE DAY

Life is soo much simpler on the boat and so are our highs . by far the most satisfying thing I do everyday and sometimes twice is take a shower on deck . we have a deck washdown pump which was one of the last things I had put onto Lawur and we cannot imagine life without it . when you are sticky and jucky and you get to go and rinse down with fresh water . not much beats that. For the kids high of the day, they would probably say watching 'Ice Age' . what a funny movie.

LOW OF THE DAY

Enduring another day of rolling . being rolled around badly now for I think over 72 hours is really getting to us . not that we are getting seasick but you cannot do a single thing without holding on to something in the boat. The only good news is that Niki and I are so tired by now that we are sleeping around no matter how far we slide in our bed between waves . this ain't the gentle rocking we so much enjoy at anchorage.

To calmer seas,

Robert
