Day 10 of 25 - Record breaking pace

DAY 10 of 25 - New records to be reported from Lawur.

Well, this is the day of reporting a few records . actually they all happened the day before but it seems my feelings got the better of me yesterday and the rolling shut my brain down so here we go now.

SAILING UPDATE

Yesterday we sailed another 153 miles which on its own would mean I equaled the previous record of day 2 or 3 but as it turns out the day before we broke the barrier of light . well OK 'trade light' travels a bit slower down here on the Pacific . we did 160 miles which equals to an average speed over 24 hours of 6.7 knots . that is not bad and for the ones who love statistics, the average wind speed as to be expected was the highest we seen for this trip too . 19.3 knots . average remind you which means we had winds up into the 22 and 23s and we are talking true wind speed here and not apparent speed.

I am sure you noticed that my spirits haven't been as high lately as I would have liked them to be . lack of sleep is causing me a headache once in a while and the continuous pressure of being on top of the boat 24 hours / 7 days a week . well 10 days by now . is causing me a bit more challenge then I anticipated. But as my dad says . only the hardy survive and of those only 5% . gotta be in the 5%, don't I. However, when I look at things objectively, this trip couldn't have gone any better so far . the boat has done remarkably well . yes I am knocking on wood . the winds have been with us for the whole 10 days so far despite us leaving from statistically the worst spot in regards to wind and the direction of the wind has been pretty good too . yes waves have been a bit a problem for us but I am starting to wonder if they are really that bad or if we are just wimps . it is all relative at the end of the day.

One last statistic, we have sailed 1260 miles in 9 days (not actually sailed mileage because that would include many detours but direct line from Z town to end of day 9) which averages out 140 miles/day . damn I am proud of that number so far . if anybody would have told me we would make that kind of progress I would have laughed at them. We talked to Weather Don today and according to him we are in a perfect position right now and we are trying to keep it this way. Our next big waypoint is 6 degrees North and 128 degrees West, when we have to decide to cross the ITCZ . yes I know I still owe you guys a piece on trade winds, ITCZ and all this sailor talk.

BOAT UPDATE

Nothing major to report . changed the halyard hoist a bit around to minimize chafe in the same spot (some good advice from a friend of ours who did this trip a few years ago), checked chafe at other spots I can reach and rerouted some lines accordingly and the charging seems to working much better since we adjusted the alternator regulator.

FISHING UPDATE

One more day of fresh food and then we are going to start fishing . promise. Our friends on Capaz seem to be catching them like crazy and my fishing hero, Ralph, says if there is flying fish there is big fish chasing it . I hope he is right because there is no lack of flying fish.

FOOD PLAN OF THE DAY

Breakfast - Waffles with Nutella, peanut butter and jams

Lunch - Egg salad with bread

Dinner - Pork chops with not sure yet what . doesn't matter anything is good with pork chops as far as I am concerned

HIGH OF THE DAY

It looks like the rolling is finally calming down a bit. If this is due to us getting used to it or if it objectively rolls less, I have no idea but I actually don't really care as long as we all sleep OK.

LOW OF THE DAY

Looks like we lost our position in the fleet and we are now bringing up the rear of the 4pack of boats, in order Long Tall Sally (Tayana 55), Ohana Kai (Catalina 42 . left 20 hours later), Capaz (Custom Bob Perry 48) and now us in the back about 20 miles behond. Obviously, there is some competitive spirit deep down in me that is hurt but more importantly, it means now that we have almost no VHF radio contact with them anymore. It was nice to be able to just call them on channel 16 like we would do on a day sail in the San Diego Bay . took 10 days which is amazing in its own . Catalina Dave go ahead . I can already hear your comments all the way across the Pacific . but let me tell you the browny points I get from Niki for NOT pushing hard but staying comfortable are worth way more . LOL

Happy voyaging,

Robert
